Challenging fixed mindsets to increase resilience of S2/3 pupils
Jordan Flynn, a PE teacher at Carrick Academy in South Ayrshire, used growth mindset strategies to help pupils see the links between effort, resilience and attainment.
Jordan hoped learning about growth mindset strategies would help pupils become more comfortable making mistakes and believe in their personal ability to improve their academic performance.
Growth mindset has been shown to play a role in closing the attainment gap between the most and least advantaged pupils, and both growth mindset and raising attainment are part of Carrick Academy’s school improvement plan.
“If schools can create a culture where effort and perseverance are celebrated, and the notion of ‘natural talent’ is challenged, then we can start to close the attainment gap and improve pupils’ confidence. I wanted to simplify complex ideas about growth mindset using situations they could connect with, so they’d start to celebrate mistakes and see the bigger picture.”
