Growth mindset to increase independent learning in numeracy
Supported by the Northern Alliance, Joanne Brown took part in Winning Scotland’s ‘Mindset Teams’ programme while serving as head teacher at Lumsden Primary School in Aberdeenshire - and as acting head at Towie Primary School, seven miles down the road.
Following two successive Covid lockdowns in 2020, Joanne discovered that some pupils had fallen behind and were struggling with their self-confidence and appetite for independent learning.
Soon after implementing the growth mindset principles, Joanne noticed a clear improvement in many pupils’ approach to maths and the general culture in the classroom.
If her students didn’t get the correct answer in a maths problem, they were taught to work backwards through their process to discover where they had veered off course.
They were also encouraged to develop coping mechanisms for dealing with the emotions triggered by a setback.
