Growth mindset is more than a tick-box exercise
Andrea Skene took part in Winning Scotland's 'Mindset Champions' programme to embed a culture of growth mindset in her biology classroom at St Matthew's Academy in Saltcoats, North Ayrshire.
She views mindset as something that should influence our 'whole way of being' to help pupils reach their full potential.
She found her third year pupils were hard working and engaged, but they struggled with problem solving. They had a mental block, and Andrea saw mindset as a route for pupils to solve their problem with problem solving!
She used classic growth mindset methodology to test attitiudinal change in pupils - asking them whether they wanted an easy test or a tricky one. After building up the pupils' mindsets, more and more opted for the tricky test to challenge themselves.
One of the main changes in pupils was that, rather than focusing only on their score in a test, they started looking for opportunities to improve.
