Growth mindset 'needs to be in with the bricks'
Staff at Morgan Academy took part in our ‘Mindset Teams’ programme to support a specific group of students to develop a growth mindset.
However, they had to put their plans on hold when the pandemic hit.
While having a growth mindset wasn’t top of mind at the height of the crisis, staff could see that an invisible culture of perseverance and self-belief was key to helping them keep going, and want to embed this going forward.
During the first lockdown, the priority was to support the most vulnerable pupils. Staff didn’t all have home access to IT systems, so sharing information and coordinating the distribution of devices was difficult.
Acting deputy head Diane Anderson believes growth mindset helped her personally during lockdown.
“When we came back, the guidance around physical distancing changed, which meant adjusting our plans for classroom layouts and timetables. We also had Covid-19 cases in the school community and had to deal with protocols around that. Having a growth mindset definitely helped me remain patient and tell myself that we’d get through it.”
