Using a growth mindset to bounce back stronger after Covid-19
Staff at Baldragon Academy in Dundee used our 'Mindset Teams’ programme to build growth mindset into the school’s values.
Although their plans were sidelined by the pandemic, this didn’t stop them from working to instil resilience and perseverance in pupils, with positive results.
The pandemic led to significant disruption at Baldragon, including chaging timetables, busy workloads and uncertainty. Staff and pupils were forced to adapt.
Teachers Carolyn Wilson and Matt Montgomery shared their insights on how a growth mindset could help staff adapt to change, take risks and be creative to help pupils.
“During the first lockdown, a lot of pupils struggled to engage with online learning and not having their teacher there," said Carolyn.
"They came back to school with more fixed mindsets. But participating in Mindset Teams has helped me to steer some of the conversations with them to help them get back into the pattern of school.
"We do lots of target setting and learner conversations to help them focus on their progress and see what they can learn from things that haven’t gone so well.”
They are now noticing that pupils across all year groups are more intrinsically motivated, and are working independently with more confidence than before.
