Mindset Teams Impact Report 2021

Mindset Teams, Winning Scotland’s flagship professional learning programme for teachers, is demonstrating powerful impact across Scotland.

Our 2021 Mindset Teams impact report presents a range of positive changes in the settings of 513 teachers across 25 Scottish local authorities.

Mindset Teams is a professional learning approach that enables teaching practitioners and senior leadership to work together to embed a growth mindset culture in their school.

They form a ‘team’ of three or more staff to complete a 12-month blended learning journey, culminating in a practical project, ensuring growth mindset is implemented both in the classroom and at a strategic level across the school community.

Five key stats from a year of growth mindset:

  • 68.5% of all teachers opted to join a ‘mindset maths’ version of the programme – the vast majority. 26.2% chose a health and wellbeing route, while 5% chose science.

  • 62% of 150 schools engaging with the course in 2020 had the majority of their pupils attending from Scotland’s most deprived areas (SIMD quintiles 1 and 2).

  • When asked whether all pupils can improve their basic level of ability, prior to the course, only 56% of teachers agreed in some form. However post course results show a significant increase to 82%  agreeing.

  • Prior to the course 1 in 4 teachers reported that between 60%-80% of pupils worried about getting the correct answer at the first attempt. This drops to 1 in 6 following the course.

  • 97% of participants feel the Mindset Teams course will make them a better teacher. 100% said the course content was relevant to their teaching practice, and 90% say it improved their relationship with pupils.
