Developing growth mindset with parents and carers
Stewarton Academy in East Ayrshire began investigating growth mindset approaches when its staff noticed some year groups with lower aspirations.
Three of the staff took part in Winning Scotland’s Mindset Champions professional learning programme to address this issue, and already there are many ways the ideas are being embedded in the school.
With support from the head teacher a growth mindset focus group is being set up with staff from departments across the school, to share practice, ideas and find ways to create a consistent growth mindset culture within the school.
The group plans to create classroom displays, encourage consistent language and involve more staff at CPD events.
Departments are using inspiring role models such as sports stars to discuss the connection between effort and achievement, and some student to student mentoring has been set up.
Alongside these internal projects, the school recognised the need to involve parents and carers in the growth mindset approach.
