Learning languages with a growth mindset
Modern language teacher at Elgin Academy, Fleur Stewart, noticed some of her students were hesitant about learning languages. She introduced growth mindset to boost their confidence.
Fleur felt pupils didn’t believe in their ability to speak a new language, and this left them unwilling to persevere.
After participating in a bilingual learning workshop and Winning Scotland’s Mindset Champions Professional Learning programme, Fleur was inspired to test out new teaching techniques that would reproduce the problem-solving approach to language learning often used by bilingual speakers.
By looking for patterns, reframing challenges and playing detective, pupils developed new mindset skills and became more engaged in their French classes.
