Pupils learn to love maths after growth mindset lessons
Kiara Sim, a teacher at Isobel Mair School in East Renfrewshire, took part in our Mindset Champions course to change the attitudes of her pupils towards maths and increase her own confidence in teaching it.
Kiara didn’t enjoy maths when she was at school, nor did she feel confident teaching it.
She was aware of a generally negative perception of maths, with the subject viewed as boring, difficult, and all about rights and wrongs. She took part in Mindset Champions to overcome these perceptions and those of her pupils, who disliked maths.
Kiara gave her pupils lessons on growth mindset and how it can be applied in numeracy. To make the subject more stimulating, she utilised resources like pictures, videos and stories
Previously her pupils would give up very quickly when faced with a maths challenge, saying it was too hard.
Now, they say maths is their favourite subject. The pupils became more secure in their core skills more quickly, with their attainment, confidence, skills and attitudes all improving as a result.
This 5-minute video case study tells Kiara's story.
