Increasing pupil confidence in literacy using growth mindset
Teacher Dawn Paterson, from Ballumbie Primary School in Dundee, used growth mindset to help pupils become more confident in writing and literacy.
Pupils at Ballumbie Primary School lacked confidence in their literacy skills. Dawn Paterson had been involved with Winning Scotland’s Mindset Champions programme and wanted to help.
For an hour each week she took a class of pupils to learn about growth mindset and how it relates to literacy. They learned how the brain works and developed an understanding that it’s OK to find learning difficult.
She also made careful efforts to give pupils ‘process praise’, encouraging effort and strategies rather than just praising their end product.
In this 5-minute video case-study, Dawn reports that the pupils became more confident, engaged and willing to challenges themselves.
