Primary 6 pupils create their own growth mindset toolkit
Jane Wood, the Primary 6 teacher at Northmuir Primary School in Angus, took part in Mindset Champions to build on existing work to help pupils increase their resilience and determination.
To introduce growth mindset, Jane created seven growth mindset themed lessons, drawing on scientific facts, real-life stories, video clips, group discussions and personal reflection.
The lessons covered:
The class set small goals to work towards over a few weeks, such as practicing kicking a football with your non-dominant foot or writing the alphabet with your non-dominant hand.

The lessons covered:
- Growth mindset vs. fixed mindset, using sorting cards to discuss attitudes to feedback, effort and confidence
- Neuroplasticity and brain changes, where pupils tried writing or using scissors with their non-dominant hand to see if they could ‘make new pathways in their brains’
- How we learn, where pupils considered ways to support their own learning style, such as using a thinking journal or drawing pictures
- Showing empathy, using a song to help children think about how other people might feel in a situation
- Building a support team, which encouraged the practice of asking for help when you need it
- Setting SMART goals, which used a video and discussion to help children set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based goals
- Problem solving, where pupils discussed strategies for overcoming roadblocks as they worked towards goals.
